Zolobayar Ganbolt – Project Proposal

Mongolia has been located between two great world powers throughout its history. Even though during Genghis Khan Conquest period, Mongolia influenced its two great neighbors; however, for the rest of its history it has been influenced politically, economically and culturally by its neighbors significantly. Before the collapse of Soviet Union Mongolia had limited exposure to countries that were outside the Soviet Union block; however, with the collapse of Soviet regime, Mongolia became in a way liberated from the burdens of Soviet politics. Just as most previously Soviet block countries, Mongolia chose democratic path of development over its old communist regime and this task required drastic changes in very short period of time. The U.S played a crucial role during this period of time where Mongolia needed an assistance to accelerate its transition to democratic system. From this the notion of the 3rd neighbor was born.

My internship-research project will attempt to predict whether the U.S can be Mongolia’s 3rd neighbor in the near future, and if so it will be aimed to predict in what fields can the U.S assist or cooperate. To broaden my topic more, I will study the accomplishments that the U.S-Mongolia relationship had over the past years as well as the failures. I will attempt to evaluate in what areas the U.S-Mongolian relationship can be improved as well as what areas have great potential for future cooperation. Also, potential issues facing U.S-Mongolian relations will be mentioned in my work.

Working in a government or NGO, which serves as intermediaries between the two countries, would be perfect fit to my project. In addition working in these organizations matches my future career goal of working in a foreign relation organization. As a Mongolian citizen with a broad knowledge of culture, history and politics, I am able to understand and explain the most phenomenas occurring in Mongolia than the most foreigners. With my knowledge of political science and with my knowledge of Mongolian, Russian, Japanese and little Korean, I will be able to interact with people from different nationalities and see some issues from their point of view.

I am planning to interview certain individuals who are working in the field of U.S-Mongolian relations as well as business to collect information about their experience and views regarding U.S-Mongolia relations. This research has to be done in Mongolia, due to the massive beurocracy, it is immensely hard to get government statistics, certain documents and important information over the internet or by other means. Also, I will try to learn as much as possible from my internship organization for my research as well as for my future career.

From my project, businessmen who are planning to do business with North America, investors who are looking for safe investment in Mongolia as well as government officials or anybody who needs a critical outlook on current progress in the U.S-Mongolian relations.
